An Escape to Neverland

Grace Ling's Spectacular Debut at New York Fashion Week

By: Tessa Dunlop

Ethereal music fills the air and thick, white smoke rolls out from backstage; Grace Ling commences her New York Spring Summer 2024 runway in shining armor. Suddenly, a quote echoes through the silver hall, “As Peter Pan explains, there are no ‘lost girls’, because girls are much too clever to fall out of their prams and be lost in this manner.” Grace Ling’s interpretation of James Matthew Barrie’s Neverland is one with curiosity and poise.

As the story unfolds, innovative silhouettes and modern hairstyles wander down the runway. Silver details glisten in the moonlit spotlights. Sewn to perfection, quality fabrics and intricate designs are consistent throughout this ensemble. From dense fleece sweaters, body-hugging dresses, sturdy leather jackets to lustrous satin trousers, Grace Ling is making her mark this season.

Not only are the garments styled to perfection, but the casting for this night-time story was chosen unmistakingly. A sense of divine yet dominant femininity fills the air as each model appears. Near the end of the show, a dark angel appears. Treading down the runway is a low-cut, satin dress with a dancing train from the heavens. Slate-black and polished, the gown is held tightly to the body by a pure silver breastplate which takes the form of two hands, effortlessly carrying the swift strides of silk beneath it. As the model turns, the most gorgeous, open-back reveals itself. This gown quite simply took everyone in the whole room’s breath away.

Sleek and minimalist, yet groundbreaking and futuresque, Grace Ling curated thirty sensual, celestial looks that were fluently presented this season.  Her use of silver was that of a mastermind. The quality of the fabrics and the craftsmanship were impeccable. Ling’s Neverland does indeed make you want to stay forever, and the only void that I must fill after watching that show is the anticipation of her next collection.
